Music educator and trumpeter, Erin K. Hufford is the Director of Bands at John Page Middle School in Madison Heights, Michigan. Her teaching appointment includes the sixth, seventh and eighth grade bands, and co-directing the beginning fifth grade band with Mr. Michael Garvey. In addition to her teaching duties at Page, she is also the Musical Director and Conductor of the Motor City Youth Brass Band. Prior to her assignment at Page she was the Assistant Director of Bands at Algonac Public Schools in Algonac, Michigan for two years. Ms. Hufford graduated as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Arts and Letters with high honors from Michigan State University after completing her student teaching in Charlotte, Michigan.
As a trumpeter Ms. Hufford has performed recently as a soloist with the Motor City Brass Band of Southfield, the Capital City Brass Band of Lansing, the Southview High School Orchestra in Toledo, the Taft Road Jazz Society, the Tecumseh Gloria Dei Chancel Choir, and the Charlotte High School Concert Band in Michigan. She is currently a member of the solo cornet section in the Motor City Brass Band and the Athena Brass Band of Montgomery Village, Maryland. She also plays trumpet in the Pentacle Brass Quintet and the Metropolitan Brass Quintet, the premier brass quintet of Motor City Brass Band.
At a national level, she has been recognized receiving fifth place in the collegiate ensemble division at the 2004 National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University. At Michigan State Ms. Hufford was a member of the Wind Symphony, Philharmonic Orchestra, Jazz Band, Spartan Marching Band, Spartan Brass, Brass Choir, Brass Quintet, Trumpet Quintet, Trumpet Ensemble, and Musique 21. She currently studies trumpet with Woodrow English, principal trumpet in the U.S. Army Band and "Taps" bugler at the memorial service for former President Reagan in Simi Valley, CA.
While at Michigan State, Ms. Hufford studied conducting with Dr. Kevin Sedatole, Director of Bands and Dr. Isaiah Odajima, Assistant Director of Bands. She also conducted the Michigan State University Symphony Band in a clinic with world renowned conductor Timothy Reynish of the Royal Northern College of Music.
Professionally, Ms. Hufford has held two internships with the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" in Washington, D.C. and worked with the Brass Band of Battle Creek. She has also served on the Motor City Brass Band Board of Directors for two years as the Artistic Committee Chairperson. In 2006 she founded the MCBB Solo and Scholarship Competition for area high school students. Ms. Hufford is a past trustee of the Capital City Brass Band board and she was the vice president of the Michigan State chapter of the Music Educators National Conference for 2004-2005. She is also a member of the International Trumpet Guild and the International Women's Brass Conference.
Ms. Hufford is looking forward to continuing the tradition of musical excellence at John Page Middle School and the Motor City Youth Brass Band. This summer she will continue to pursue her masters degree in music education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
